In the touch screen tablet world, the kingdom of the legendary king iPad is lately under siege from more and more usurpers. One of the usurper's name is Asus EEE Pad, and we will talk a bit about these two devices.
First of all the iPad. This touch tablet is already a legend on its own. It is the first of its kind, the rebel kid of a rebel company, Apple, which never played by mainstream rules. About utility, the iPad comes in-between of what is probably the best smart phone in the world, the iPhone and the Mac-book line of mini laptops, with the big promise to shake the foundations of the Netbook dominance on the small and portable PC market.
Powered by a PA Semi-designed 1GHz A4 System-On-a-Chip (SOC), a single Cortex A8 core CPU, teamed with a PowerVR SGX GPU, the iPad has at least 512 MB of RAM and a storage capacity of 16GB, 32GB or 64GB. The OS is identical to the one used on the iPhone.
The big hardware problem with the iPad is the lack of a built-in video camera, something that is not really understandable because I personally can't think of a better way to have a Skype video conversation than with the iPad in your hands.
On the other hand, the Asus usurper also has a lot to be proud of. It has a slightly faster CPU, the 1.2GHz dual core Qualcomm 8260, 512 MB of RAM, up to 64GB storage and 3G, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity.
The Display is a bit smaller, 7.1", but the Asus device learned from the mistakes Apple made and has put a 1.2 megapixel camera on the front of the device, and a 5 megapixel one on the back. The battery has a similar endurance with the Apple product, and the OS is the acclaimed Android 3.0 Honeycomb from Google.
The battle will surely be going on and on for the next foreseeable future, and the competitors are expected to bring the big guns, with improvements in the near future when it comes to both OS and hardware.
